👣 First Steps & First Shoes: What You Need to Know

👣 First Steps & First Shoes: What You Need to Know

Around 12 months old, something magical starts to happen—your baby becomes a wobbly little toddler, eager to explore the world on two feet! At first, they’ll likely be cruising—holding onto furniture (or your leg!) as they test their balance. Full-on walking may take a little longer, but one thing’s for sure...

👟 It’s shoe time!

🛑 Not All Baby Shoes Are Created Equal

Those tiny, sparkly shoes at the supermarket? Adorable, yes. Good for growing feet? Not quite. Once your little one is up and moving, properly fitted shoes are essential.

Why? Because your toddler’s feet are not just small versions of adult feet—they’re developing bones, muscles, and balance systems. The wrong shoes now can lead to discomfort, poor posture, or long-term foot problems down the track.

✔️ What to Look for in Baby’s First Shoes

Here’s what your little explorer really needs:

The Right Fit

Baby shoes should be measured to the half-size, and fitted not only for length but also for width. Chubby feet? Narrow heels? A proper fitting ensures comfort and healthy growth.

Soft (But Safe) Soles

Early walking shoes can still be soft and flexible, but they must have non-slip soles. You want your toddler to feel the ground—but not slide across it!

Room to Wiggle

There should be a little space at the toe for growing room, but not so much that they trip. Think: snug but not tight.

💡 A Few Fun Tips:

  • Let your toddler walk barefoot as much as possible at home—it's great for balance and muscle development.

  • Look for shoes made with breathable materials to avoid sweaty toes.

  • Check the fit regularly—baby feet grow fast! Every 6–8 weeks, you may need to size up.

Your toddler's feet are going places—make sure their shoes are up for the journey. The right pair can turn those first wobbles into confident steps and happy adventures.

Ready, set… step! 👣
