Make your own baby food

Rather than buying baby food packed full of additives and preservatives, turn your hand to the kitchen and try to make your own. Another benefit to making your own is avoiding the waste that comes with buying individually packaged baby foods.

First, you need to make sure you have the right equipment – a blender or food processor will do the job, although you can also get all-in-one baby food makers which steam cooks and purees the food. Make sure to look around and find what is best for you.

All foods need to be properly prepped before pureeing. Produce must be washed, then baked, boiled or steamed if they are hard. You should always peel and pit fruit and veg. While pureeing you can add liquid as desired; water, breast milk or formula are all good options. Grains should be fully cooked before pureeing. Meat should be trimmed and skinned and fully cooked. You can puree meat in with vegetables for an all-in-one meal.

When adding flavour to baby food, avoid sugar and salt! Your baby hasn’t developed a taste for either yet, so why start now? Use herbs and spices instead – cinnamon for example adds a lovely flavour to fruit and veg alike.

Home-made purees can be stored in the fridge for 4 days maximum, and the freezer for up to 3 months.

Handy hint: Ice cube trays are great for freezing and storing in single baby-sized portions.
