It's a SIGN

While your baby is learning to speak, there is another important skill that they could pick up alongside - SIGNING!

Most parents opt for Makaton, a form of sign which is accompanied by speech and is a simple variation of British Sign Language.

Signing is not just for people with hearing impairments, but is a valuable skill for anyone. As your baby begins to develop an understanding of the world and themselves, but they don't yet have the speech to accompany it, they may get frustrated at their inability to communicate. Introducing your baby to a few essential signs like 'hungry', 'more', 'water', 'mum' and 'dad' can help them communicate with you.

Once the basics have been mastered, you can introduce as many as you like, some opting for animal name signs and foods (handy hint: teach the foods you want them to ask for first).
